Need some extra motivation? Interested to find those crazy people you see up at the crack of dawn on the roads or in the sea? Want to be part of a fantastic community?
And, most importantly, do you want to have fun?
Zone3 ambassador Anoushka Greenaway discusses the benefits of joining a triathlon club, and why she’d recommend it…
Let’s face it, training on your own is nowhere near as fun as training with a group of keen triathletes!
There is no doubt that training alone has its benefits and it is great if you can find that motivation and discipline within you to allow you to dig deep and power through those tough sessions. There are however, some occasions where the thought of an early morning swim before university, an afternoon cycle in the rain or a late night run after work just doesn’t seem so thrilling if you’re doing it alone.
This is where being part of, not just a triathlon club, but a ‘community’ plays a strong role. There are so many benefits to joining one!
Firstly, it is the perfect way to find all those mad like-minded triathletes in your area. It is great for getting to know, chatting and spending time with people that also have a passion for triathlon. This also means that you can discuss upcoming competitions with your fellow club mates and take part in races together, as a team. Completing your first triathlon can be a bit daunting, but knowing you have a club backing and supporting you all the way is really uplifting.
Another reason relating to finding all those similar individuals is the social scene that comes along with a club. You get to spend hours chatting during training (although this may be a bit harder when swimming, unless you have a special talent of being able to talk and hear underwater). A triathlon club creates social opportunities like dinners, club relays and even the AGM (annual general meeting), which is the perfect opportunity to laugh at all those off-guard club photos taken throughout the year.
As well as this, being part of a club really is a great way to motivate yourself to get out and train. Having others push you can really help you benefit in getting fitter and improving your performance. It is a great way of keeping yourself going knowing others are there right by your side in just as much pain as you are. And there is nothing wrong with a bit of friendly competition during training, right?
Triathlon is an excellent way to get fit, incorporating 3 of the best sports. In a club you really get the chance to improve your own performance in the 3 disciplines. As part of a club you can gain benefits from the coaches advise and expertise, as well as other triathletes, which can really help you improve. This may be especially important in swimming for example, where technique plays a big part. Having coaches and other athletes watch and constructively criticise you, and having those structured training sessions throughout the year can enable a big increase in performance.
Catering for ALL Abilities
Triathlon clubs cater for all abilities. Everyone involved will have their own goals and objectives and clubs are the perfect way to really get into the swing of triathlon and have tonnes of fun. Joining a new club can be scary as you become the ‘newbie,’ but triathletes are the most kind hearted and enthusiastic people and love having the chance to meet new training buddies and will get you settled in right away. Next thing you know you’ll be signed up to an ironman!
The best thing I have done during my time in triathlon is joining a club and I couldn’t recommend it more! Motivation, coaching, race day pals, the chance to have a good natter whilst working your socks off training and of course CLUB KIT! What more could you want!?
