Beginners Guide to Tow Floats & Buoys

What Are Tow Floats & Buoys?

Tow floats, also known as swimming buoys or open water swimming buoys, are essential safety devices for open water swimmers.

They're inflatable devices that are attached to a swimmer via a leash around the waist and it float behind them, providing increased visibility and buoyancy.

Why Use a Tow Float?

Open water swimming is a thrilling and liberating experience, offering swimmers the chance to explore natural bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, and oceans. However, it also comes with risks that make safety measures essential. One of the most effective safety tools for open water swimmers is the tow float, also known as a swimming buoy.

Here are several reasons why using a tow float is crucial for safety:

  • Enhanced Visibility

Visibility is Key: Tow floats are typically bright, fluorescent colors, making swimmers highly visible to boats, jet skis, kayakers, and other swimmers. This visibility reduces the risk of accidents, as it makes the swimmer's presence known in busy or murky waters.

  • Buoyancy and Support

Rest When Needed: Tow floats provide buoyancy, offering swimmers a safe place to rest if they become fatigued, experience cramps, or encounter unexpected conditions. This is especially important in open water, where there are no pool edges or lifeguards to rely on.

  • Emergency Aid

Safety Beacon: In an emergency, a tow float can serve as a flotation device, keeping the swimmer afloat while they signal for help or wait for assistance. Some models are equipped with whistles or compartments for storing emergency signalling devices.

  • Storage for Essentials

Carry Safety Gear: Many tow floats feature dry bags or storage compartments where swimmers can keep essential items like a phone, first aid kit, or energy gels. This not only enhances safety but also adds convenience, allowing swimmers to carry hydration, nutrition, and communication tools.

  • Confidence Boost

Mental Safety: Knowing that they have a buoyant aid trailing behind them can boost a swimmer's confidence, particularly for beginners or those venturing into open water for the first time. This psychological benefit can help swimmers relax and focus on their technique and enjoyment.

  • Group Swimming

Stay Together: For group swims, tow floats make it easier to keep track of fellow swimmers. This is beneficial for swim coaches, buddies, or family members who want to ensure everyone stays together and is accounted for.

How to Use a Tow Float

Using a tow float is straightforward, but ensuring proper setup and usage is essential for maximizing its benefits.

  1. Inflate: Inflate the tow float by blowing into the valve until it's firm. After inflation, press on the float gently to ensure it holds air properly and doesn’t deflate. Double-check the valve to ensure it's securely closed.

  2. Attach: The tow float comes with a leash that attaches to the swimmer. Leashes are adjustable and can be secured around the waist or hips. Adjust the strap so that it fits snugly but comfortably. It should be tight enough to stay in place without causing discomfort or restricting movement. Ensure the buckle or attachment mechanism is easy to access and operate. In case of an emergency, you should be able to release the tow float quickly.

  3. Swim: Let the float trail behind you as you swim. It won’t interfere with your stroke or speed. The float is designed to follow your movements smoothly without creating significant drag.
