The Evolution of the Zone3 Aspire Wetsuit: From the First Speed Cuff to Today

The Zone3 Aspire was our first wetsuit. It launched in 2009 with the Speed Cuff, a Zone3-first design that made wetsuits faster to take off in transition, and it has been redeveloped every few years since. Today it is the race-day benchmark of the Zone3 range.

Anyone who has raced a triathlon knows the moment. You run up the beach with legs that haven't quite come back to you, reach for the zip, and the wetsuit decides it would rather stay on. The sleeves stick at the wrists, the legs grip at the ankles, and the seconds go.

Where the Zone3 Aspire Wetsuit started

Zone3 founder James Lock was racing professionally when he set out to fix that moment. In 2006 he became World Aquathlon and World Biathle Champion and started Zone3 on a hot desk in the Loughborough University business centre.

Getting out of a wetsuit quickly when you're wet, tired and the clock is running was a problem everyone racing had, and nobody had done anything about it.

It took three years of drawings, sampling and testing in top-flight racing before the first Aspire launched in 2009.

What is a Speed Cuff?

A Speed Cuff is a wrist and ankle cuff designed to make a wetsuit faster and smoother to take off in transition. Zone3 introduced it on the first Aspire in 2009 as a Zone3-first design that set a new benchmark, and it has since been adopted across the Zone3 range and across the sport.

Today's Aspire still carries it, as the Pro speed cuff, alongside a Silk-X lining that makes the suit quick to get on and off.

How the Aspire has changed since 2009

The Zone3 Aspire wetsuit has kept its name since 2009 and been redeveloped every few years, shaped by feedback from the athletes who race in it and the swimmers who train in it.

The reviews have followed. 220 Triathlon gave the first Aspire 10/10 in 2010, and in 2025 rated it 98%, the highest score they have ever given a wetsuit.

What's inside today's Aspire

The shoulders are where a wetsuit either lets you swim or fights you. The Aspire uses Yamamoto #40, the highest-stretch grade in the suit, in a one-piece X-10 shoulder panel, so your reach stays long and your stroke stays your own.

Through the core and legs it switches to B-Prene Yamamoto #39, the most buoyant grade and a biodegradable one. B-Prene shows approximately 30% breakdown within 522 days. On the men's suit, Aerodome panels add buoyancy through an internationally patented 3 to 5mm air-hole construction.

The outer surface carries SCS coating, which brings the friction resistance coefficient down to 0.021 from 0.32 for uncoated smooth skin. A BRE chest panel supports a fuller body rotation, and Sensory Catch panels on the forearms give you more feel for the water as you pull.

The men's Aspire runs from 5mm to 1mm, and the women's from 3mm to 1.5mm.

Who is the Aspire built for?

The Aspire is the race suit, sharpened. It sits below the Vanquish-X, the most efficient wetsuit Zone3 makes, and above the Vision, our performance wetsuit. If you're weighing up the three, the Wetsuit Guide sets them side by side, and our Vanquish-X vs Aspire article looks at the top two in detail.

The Aspire started as an answer to a fumbled transition. Seventeen years of redevelopment later, it is still built around the same idea: a wetsuit that swims fast and comes off quickly when the clock is running.
