"I developed really fast and suddenly found myself racing the best in the world!" Edda Hannesdóttir
Eda's Story
Edda Hannesdóttir, a triathlete from Iceland got into triathlon because a friend suggested it. They figured that because she had a swimming background and was a solid runner shewould be good at triathlon. And so the story began...
Edda recovered from two major injuries and competed around the world to qualify for the 2024 Olympics. She is Icelands first triathlete to be heading to the games.
GREATEST CHALLENGES:
Keeping injury free has been a challenge for Edda in recent years. ‘I really hope I am able to find a healthy way to train and be able to compete feeling strong’.
It’s not been an easy journey for Edda, as she underwent surgery twice in the past four years, keeping her away from the sport whilst she recovered.
‘When I started to race again this year, I did feel mentally stronger and really calm in myself. I think that's something that I learned from my injury – when I was injured, I really needed to just take it one day at a time.’ she said.
SEASON GOALS:
Racing the Olympics for my country Iceland is the biggest season goal. My other goal is to get stronger and more robust to hopefully avoid injuries and health problems.
KEY RESULTS
I really enjoyed the race I did in Osaka, Japan in May when I was able to solidify my qualification for Paris Olympics!
TOP TIPS
My top tip and advice for other triathletes is to have fun. Training with people makes sport enjoyable and you’re more likely to keep turning up and working hard.
The second piece of advice would be to never give up no matter what is thrown at you. I’ve managed to overcome injury and am now representing my country in the Olympics. I didn’t think this would be possible when I first got injured and had to have surgery.
