Active-Flex Buoyancy Shorts

The Active-Flex Buoyancy Shorts are the accessible entry point to Zone3’s buoyancy shorts range, the category Zone3 invented in 2007. They lift your hips and upper legs into a flat, streamlined position so you spend your training building technique instead of fighting the water. Unlike a pull buoy, your full kick and rotation stay in play.

Active-Flex Buoyancy Shorts

WHO IT’S FOR

Your legs sink when you swim, and every length costs more effort than it should. You’re starting technique work and want lift that keeps your whole stroke involved rather than a pull buoy that switches half of it off. The Active-Flex gives you the wetsuit feel in the pool or warm open water at the most accessible point in the range.

  • Trains in the pool or warm open water without a wetsuit
  • Starting technique work on body position
  • Prefers a natural alternative to a pull buoy
  • Wants a first pair of buoyancy shorts without top-end spend

WHERE IT SITS IN THE RANGE

The Active-Flex is the starting point of Zone3’s buoyancy shorts range. Stepping up, the Originals are the 2007 heritage design in Yamamoto Smoothskin neoprene, and the Premium Option is the most buoyant, lowest-drag pair Zone3 makes. Which pair? Read the buoyancy shorts guide. (insert link)

KEY BENEFITS

  1. Lift where sinking legs cost you most The 3mm and 2mm neoprene combination lifts your hips and upper legs into a flat, streamlined position with balanced, manageable buoyancy.
  2. Your whole stroke stays involved You get the lift of a pull buoy with your full kick and rotation kept in play, so the technique you build transfers straight to race day. Core support from the neoprene helps you hold the position between drills.
  3. The wetsuit feel without the suit For pool training and warm open water, the Active-Flex recreates the body position a wetsuit gives you on race day.
  4. The accessible way in As the entry point to the range Zone3 invented, the Active-Flex covers the core job of buoyancy training at its most accessible.

WHAT YOU’LL FEEL

Push off and your hips rise on their own. The water stops pulling at your legs, and suddenly there’s room to think about your stroke. You can kick, rotate, and drill exactly as you would on race day. For most swimmers this is the first time a flat body position feels effortless enough to build on.

FIT

Snug fit with a drawstring waist that adjusts to size; unisex.

WHY TRAIN WITH BUOYANCY?

Why train with buoyancy? Sinking legs create drag, and drag costs speed. Buoyancy shorts lift your hips into a flat, streamlined position so you can build technique instead of fighting the water. How buoyancy shorts improve your swim.

Key Features

Buoyancy and body position

  • 3/2mm neoprene construction: balanced lift raises the hips and upper legs into a flat, streamlined position
  • Core support: neoprene compression through the waist and hips helps hold swim posture

Comfort and fit

  • Drawstring waist: adjusts to size
  • Unisex fit: one design across all swimmers, sized S to XXL

Speed and drag

  • Smoothskin front panels: smooth-surfaced neoprene at the front reduces drag through the water

Construction and materials

  • Nylon-lined neoprene side and back panels: durable lining built for regular training use

Use

  • Training tool, not race kit: neoprene is banned in declared non-wetsuit swims

They’re better than jammers

"I swim in the sea daily during summer, and in winter I switch to the local council pool. Moving to fresh water is always a struggle, and the change in buoyancy is surprising. These do help, though it’s hard to know by how much. In my case, I feel I should have spent a bit more and gone for the Neoprene Buoyancy Shorts ‘Originals’ 5/3mm. I’m around 95 kg and could have used a bit more lift."

Active-Flex Buoyancy Shorts

"Fit is true to size. Very comfortable & buoyancy level was just enough to maintain a good swimming position, without being too much. I use for open water swimming and am sure these will also provide additional warmth as the sea cools down, until such time as it gets cold enough over the winter to require a full wetsuit"

Gareth L. (5/5)

Year round use

"Swam in these throughout the summer - very comfortable and great support for heavy legs. Now I'm using them under my wetsuit for the winter - equally brilliant. Recommended."

David S. (5/5)

Just re-ordered!

"Had my first pair for over 12months and use them pretty much daily for sea swimming (throughout the winter also). Absolutely brilliant in terms of comfort & fit and the initial lift they give you in terms of buoyancy is a real confidence booster and makes swimming, especially in slightly choppy conditions, so much easier. Will be interesting to see if getting a new pair makes a difference again as I'm not certain if that buoyancy just becomes less noticeable or performance slightly decreases with wear & tear. . . money very, very well spent"
