Heat-Tech Dura Swim Boot

The Heat-Tech Dura Swim Boot is a 4mm wetsuit boot for cold-water swimming, built for the walk in as much as the swim. A highly durable textured rubber sole grips wet rock, shingle and slipways, and a reinforced toe box takes the knocks that come with a rocky entry. Once you are in, 4mm neoprene and a sealed ankle keep the cold out for the length of the swim. Unisex, UK 4 to 12.

Heat-Tech Dura Swim Boot

WHO IT'S FOR

You swim from a beach rather than a pool edge, and the worst part of the swim happens before it starts. Rock, shingle and slipway are hard on bare feet, and standing about on them in the cold is what shortens a session. Boots fix the entry and the exit, which is where a lot of the cold actually gets you.

  • Cold-water swimming from rocky, shingle or slipway entries
  • Surfing, paddleboarding and board sports
  • Sea swimming through the winter
  • Long walks in and out where bare feet are the limiting factor

WHERE IT SITS IN THE RANGE

This is the most protective footwear Zone3 makes, with a rubber sole and a reinforced toe box built for ground you have to walk over. The Heat-Tech Swim Socks give thermal-lined warmth without the sole, so take those if you are getting in from sand or a pontoon. The Active-Flex Swim Sock is the lighter and more flexible option again.

KEY BENEFITS

1. You can walk in over anything. A highly durable textured rubber sole grips wet rock, shingle, slipways and the deck of a board, so the ground stops deciding how you get in.

2. Your toes survive the entry. A reinforced toe box takes the knocks that come with rocky entries and handling boards, which is where swim footwear usually gives out first.

3. Your feet stay warm once you are swimming. 4mm neoprene holds warmth without stiffening the foot, supporting natural flex through the ankle during swimming, paddling and surf launches.

4. Cold water is not flushing in at the ankle. A gasket works with the hook-and-loop strap to seal the opening, which is what separates a warm boot from one that only covers the foot.

5. They come off at the end without a fight. A heel pull loop gives you something to pull on, and the boot compresses more easily than a stiffer surf boot, so it moves with the foot rather than resisting it.

WHAT YOU'LL FEEL

The first difference is that you stop looking down. You walk in at the pace you would walk anywhere, over ground you would normally pick your way across. In the water your feet are warm without feeling wrapped up, and your ankles still bend, so your kick is your kick. Coming out is the part you notice on a cold day, standing on shingle in no particular hurry to reach your shoes.

GRIP ON THE WAY IN

The entry is where a swim boot earns its place. A highly durable textured rubber sole holds on wet rock, shingle, slipways and the deck of a board, and a reinforced toe box takes the knocks that come with all of them. You walk in at your own pace instead of picking your way. Tech behind it: Textured rubber sole, reinforced toe box.

SEALED AGAINST THE COLD

4mm neoprene keeps warmth in without stiffening the foot, so the ankle still bends and the kick still works. A gasket at the ankle works with the hook-and-loop strap to close the opening, because a boot that lets water through is only a covering. The warmth holds for the length of the swim rather than the first few minutes. Tech behind it: 4mm neoprene, ankle gasket and hook-and-loop strap.

SWIMS AS WELL AS IT WALKS

A stiffer surf boot is built for standing on a board rather than for swimming. This one compresses more easily, so it moves with the foot through a stroke and does not fight you getting in or out. The heel pull loop gives you something to pull on when your hands have stopped cooperating. Tech behind it: Compressible construction, heel pull loop.

Key Features

GRIP AND PROTECTION

  • Textured rubber sole: highly durable tread for traction on wet rock, shingle, slipways and paddle boards.
  • Reinforced toe box: added protection and stability on rocky entries and when handling boards.

WARMTH

  • 4mm neoprene construction: insulation with enough flex left for swimming, paddling and board sports.
  • Secure ankle seal: a gasket works with the hook-and-loop strap to seal against cold-water flush.

FIT AND CONSTRUCTION

  • Flexible, compressible design: compresses more easily than a stiffer surf boot, so it works as a swimming boot as well as one for surf and paddle sports.
  • Heel pull loop: something to pull on for entry and exit in cold conditions.
  • Unisex sizing: UK 4 to 12.

Warm for moderately cold weather

"Feel relatively natural compared to more rigid swim shoes I have tried before. They aren't super warm but ok in coldish water."

— Rahim R. (5/5)

Good for sea stones and rocks and warmth

"I’m new to cold water sea swimming and needed something to get out into the water over stones and rocks. These boots have really helped and also helped with the cold water. Would definitely recommend - though I’m a real newbie. . ."

"I wore them for the Bantham Swoosh and they were just right. I didn’t overheat."

Great addition

"Love these. I swim where it's cold all year round and has a rocky beach. These are super warm especially when paired with Zone3 thermal socks. The sole is godsend on the rocky/pebble beach. Definitely worth getting."

— Martin (5/5)
