L'un des plus grands pelotons masculins professionnels jamais réunis pour l'édition 2019 des Championnats du monde Ironman à Kona, Hawaï. Les yeux seraient tournés vers le retour du double champion Jan Frodeno, le détenteur du record en titre Patrick Lange et le champion olympique Alistair Brownlee qui se tenait à la hauteur et désireux d'imprimer sa marque d'autorité sur les courses de fond. D'autres noms attendus pour faire bouger les choses seraient les motards Cameron Wurf et Bart Aernouts, qui ont enregistré le deuxième temps le plus rapide de tous les temps sur le parcours en 2018.

Les conditions étaient loin d'être rapides dans la baie de Kailua pour les 3,8 km de natation qui ont marqué le début de l'épreuve, mais la course a suscité un sentiment d'urgence dès que le canon a tiré pour signaler le début de la course. Josh Amberger, le super nageur australien, a pris les devants dès le premier mouvement et a continué à imprimer sa marque sur la jambe et à accélérer le rythme. Dans son maillot de bain personnalisé Zone3 Kona édition, il a réussi à réduire le groupe de tête à seulement 9 des 55 partants dans des conditions agitées. Sortant de l'eau en 47:28, Amberger était à moins d'une minute du record de natation, assis dans les conditions parfaites rencontrées en 2018, et a mené le peloton en T1.

Le rythme initial sur la moto a été dicté par Jan Frodeno, Maurice Clavel et Ali Brownlee, ce qui a conduit à des divisions dans un groupe de tête déjà restreint. A mi-course sur la moto, le leader 5 a commencé à se diviser davantage et Josh Amberger a fini par être distancé par les efforts de Frodeno. Le groupe de poursuivants composé de motards forts comprenait Cameron Wurf, Sébastien Kienle et Joe Skipper, mais ils avaient encore plus de 2 minutes de retard. La journée a finalement été influencée par la mécanique, Brownlee et Skipper ayant tous deux subi des crevaisons et ayant eu besoin de l'aide d'un service neutre. Au T2, Jan Frodeno menait la course en solo avec 2 minutes d'avance sur Tim O'Donnell en deuxième position, 90 secondes supplémentaires devant le peloton de poursuite composé de super-motards.

En course, les premiers signes montraient qu'Ali Brownlee avait la vitesse la plus rapide et il semblait qu'il allait se battre pour le podium. Cependant, après seulement 10 km, il a commencé à s'estomper. Cela a laissé la porte ouverte à Sébastien Kienle pour se classer troisième derrière Frodeno et O'Donnell. Joe Skipper s'est étonnamment remis de sa malheureuse crevaison et a couru fort pour se placer dans le top 10 dès les premiers stades de la course, et Bart Aernouts a montré les signes d'une répétition de 2018 où il s'est retrouvé en lice pour le podium. À l'arrivée, il n'y avait aucune concurrence pour Jan Frodeno qui a remporté une victoire spectaculaire avec un nouveau record du parcours de 7:51:13, suivi par O'Donnell avec plus de 8 minutes de retard. Kienle complète le podium. Joe Skipper a couru un marathon de 2 min 53 s pour prendre la 6ème place, un cran plus haut qu'en 2018 et Bart Aernouts devait prendre la 9ème place.

Avant la course, on s'attendait à ce que Lucy Charles-Barclay mène la natation et une grande partie du vélo, le duo composé de Daniela Ryf et d'Anne Haug étant susceptible de se frayer un chemin à travers le peloton et de la rattraper à un moment donné. Le favori des bookmakers était Ryf, mais le facteur décisif serait probablement de savoir quand, plutôt que si, Charles-Barclay serait attrapé et combien de temps elle pourrait tenir le coup. Les superstars allemandes du cyclisme, Daniela Bleymehl et Laura Philipp, étaient susceptibles de figurer en bonne place, surtout si les conditions étaient difficiles.

La course a commencé comme prévu, avec Charles-Barclay nageant avec Lauren Brandon pour se séparer dès le début en un duo de tête. L'écart a continué de croître sur le peloton de poursuite et, au T1, il était passé à 5 minutes. Avec un temps de 49:02, Charles-Barclay avait pris près de 10 minutes d'avance sur certaines de ses plus grandes rivales.

Sur le vélo, Lucy Charles-Barclay a rapidement distancé son partenaire de natation et s'est lancée en solo sur l'autoroute Queen K. Elle a poussé incroyablement fort sur les 50 premiers kilomètres de l'étape vélo et l'écart est passé à 6 minutes, même Daniela Ryf perdant du temps. Un groupe composé d'Anne Haug et Sarah Crowley maintenait son retard de 6 minutes, tandis que le duo allemand composé de Daniela Bleymehl et Laura Philipp faisait tout son possible pour réduire son retard dans l'étape de natation. En T2, ce duo allemand avait réalisé les temps de passage à vélo les plus rapides de la journée pour se mettre en lice, Daniela Bleymehl entrant en transition à la deuxième place, à 8 minutes de Charles-Barclay. Daniela Ryf n'était pas à son image habituelle sur le parcours vélo, et la championne du monde en titre s'est retrouvée avec 12 minutes d'avance pour rattraper son retard sur l'étape marathon.

Directement sortie du T2, Anne Haug est partie avec la vitesse de course la plus rapide et a cherché à réduire son écart de 8 minutes avec le leader en solo. À mi-parcours de la course, cet écart était pratiquement comblé et Charles-Barclay commençait à montrer ses premiers signes de faiblesse et constatait que son rythme diminuait. Daniela Ryf avait débuté le marathon avec des signes positifs, mais l'écart restait à 10 minutes à mi-parcours et elle commençait à avoir l'air battue et brisée. À 35 km des 42 km de course à pied, Sarah Crowley a rattrapé et dépassé Lucy Charles-Barclay pour la 2e place, Lucy semblant avoir besoin de se concentrer dur juste pour conserver sa place sur le podium. Cependant, par un coup du sort, Sarah Crowley allait perdre son élan juste au moment où Lucy retrouvait un second souffle. A seulement 2km de l'arrivée, Charles-Barclay a bouclé le repas de Crowley pour reprendre sa 2ème place.

Anne Haug a été la grande gagnante en 8:33:15, se montrant très convaincante et forte tout au long de la course. Lucy Charles-Barclay a terminé avec 6 minutes de retard pour prendre la 2e place, avec Sarah Crowley 30 secondes supplémentaires derrière pour compléter le podium. Après une superbe étape à vélo, Daniela Bleymehl a souffert sur le marathon mais a terminé à une respectable 9ème position.

Want to swim without getting tired? It’s all about breathing and technique… 1️⃣ Stay Streamlined Keep your body flat and straight, with a slight rotation with each stroke. Engage your core and don’t look up - this will stop your legs from sinking. 2️⃣ Breathe Smoothly Stick to a steady breathing rhythm—breathe every 2-3 strokes or switch sides every 3 if that works. Control your exhale underwater, so you can inhale when you turn to breath. 3️⃣ Relax Your Strokes Don’t fight the water—stretch your arms out, glide, then pull. Keep it long and smooth to save energy. 4️⃣ Kick Efficiently Use small, gentle flutter kicks to stay balanced. A 2-beat kick (one kick per arm stroke) is great for long swims. 5️⃣ Master Your Pull Keep your elbows high for a strong catch and pull the water back with your forearms and hands. You want to feel the water’s pressure against your arm and hand for a powerful stroke. 6️⃣ Build Endurance Gradually Add interval training to your swim sessions to build endurance: swim 50-100m, rest for 15-20 seconds, and repeat. Be honest, do you do these steps after each swim to keep your goggles in good condition? 1️⃣ Give Them a Rinse After each swim, rinse your goggles with fresh water to get rid of chlorine, salt, and grime. 2️⃣ Hands Off the Lenses Don’t touch or rub the inside of the lenses – it’ll help keep the anti-fog coating working properly. 3️⃣ Let Them Dry Naturally Leave your goggles to air dry completely before putting them away. 4️⃣ Store Them Safely Pop them in a protective case when you’re not using them to stop scratches on the lenses!
