Reprendre le sport après la grossesse : les conseils de la triathlète Vicky Holland pour les mamans

Après près de 18 ans de triathlon, trois Jeux olympiques, une médaille olympique, un titre mondial et une série complète de médailles des Jeux du Commonwealth, mon mari et moi avons décidé que nous voulions avoir un bébé.


Je n'étais pas sûr que cela signifiait que je me retirerais du sport ou non , mais quelque chose en moi me disait de ne jamais prendre « officiellement » cette décision et de simplement garder mes options ouvertes.


Fin janvier 2023, nous avons accueilli notre fille, Emmie, et huit mois plus tard, je franchissais la ligne de départ pour la première fois depuis près de deux ans. Cela semble simple, n'est-ce pas ?!

Les routines d'entraînement du triathlon changeraient

Il s’avère que reprendre l’entraînement de triathlon après avoir eu un bébé n’a pas été une mince affaire. Mais je peux honnêtement dire que c’était un travail d’amour de revenir sur la ligne de départ . Cette dernière phase de ma carrière restera toujours quelque chose dont je me souviendrai avec une grande fierté.


J'avais 36 ans lorsque je suis tombée enceinte et 37 ans lorsqu'Emmie est née. Donc, même si je savais que je voulais vraiment un enfant, je savais aussi que cela pourrait signifier la fin de ma carrière.


Je devais être à l’aise en sachant que je ne pourrais probablement plus m’engager à des semaines d’entraînement de 30 heures, que mon niveau de performance ne serait peut-être plus jamais le même, que mon horaire de sommeil ne se rétablirait peut-être jamais et que je devrais toujours tenir compte des besoins des autres humains avant mes envies de me lancer dans des courses aux quatre coins du monde.


C'était un risque que j'étais prêt à prendre et bien sûr, je suis passé du top 15 mondial à environ 250 mondial pendant mon temps libre.


J'ai repris la compétition seulement 9 mois avant les Jeux Olympiques de Paris, ce qui signifiait que j'étais toujours très en difficulté pour intégrer une quatrième équipe olympique, j'étais donc réaliste quant à mes attentes.


Nous avons tellement de talents au Royaume-Uni qu'il est extrêmement difficile de faire partie d'une équipe, surtout quand on a arrêté le sport pendant près de deux ans, qu'on a eu un bébé, qu'on n'a pas de points/classement et qu'on n'a pas pu participer aux courses nécessaires pour avoir une chance de se qualifier. Alors que je voyageais aux quatre coins du monde pour me donner une chance, j'étais toujours très consciente que pour la première fois de ma carrière, ma « raison d'être » n'était pas uniquement les Jeux Olympiques. Au lieu de cela, je courais pour le défi de voir à quel point je pouvais être en forme et rapide après un bébé, pour me prouver à moi-même et aux autres que je (et donc à n'importe qui d'autre) pouvais revenir au niveau que j'avais avant ma grossesse , et pour vraiment profiter à nouveau du triathlon.


Mais le plus important, c'est que j'espère qu'un jour, ma petite fille saura qu'elle peut avoir une famille et la vie professionnelle qu'elle désire - après tout, c'est sa mère qui l'a fait. Les femmes ne devraient pas avoir à choisir.

Encourager les femmes à reprendre le sport après la grossesse

Je prendrai officiellement ma retraite dans quelques semaines après avoir repris la compétition depuis un peu plus d'un an et même si beaucoup pourraient penser que c'est étrange de revenir à un niveau élevé, c'est parfait en ce qui me concerne.


Je n'avais jamais prévu de continuer à pratiquer ce sport pendant encore 5 ans, mais j'avais cette envie de me gratter et un réel désir de quitter le triathlon professionnel dans un endroit où je suis heureux, où j'aime toujours ce sport et où j'ai pu réaliser quelques très bonnes performances.


Cette année, j'ai remporté une médaille en Coupe du monde et, plus récemment, je suis devenu champion d'Europe dans l'une de mes meilleures performances globales. C'est génial de savoir que je pars sur une telle lancée.


Je nagerai, ferai du vélo et courrai toujours, mais avec un peu moins d'intensité et de fréquence que je le fais actuellement ! J'espère avoir plus de temps libre maintenant et j'aimerais passer une partie de ce temps à aider d'autres femmes à planifier leur retour au sport après l'accouchement .


Le corps humain est une chose incroyable, et le corps féminin est sûrement la chose la plus extraordinaire . Le fait que nous soyons capables de faire grandir des êtres humains entiers en nous me stupéfie toujours. Mais ne minimisons pas cela, c'est une épreuve énorme et ce n'est absolument pas quelque chose dont on peut simplement « rebondir ».


J’ai appris à éliminer toute attente de ce que je devrais ou pourrais faire pendant la grossesse et après l’accouchement et à avoir beaucoup de patience avec moi-même.


Ma grossesse n'a pas été particulièrement active et j'ai eu beaucoup de douleurs, surtout à partir du milieu de la grossesse, et vers 6 mois, j'étais réduite à promener mon chien comme seule activité. Ce n'était certainement pas la grossesse saine et active que j'avais imaginée pour moi-même, mais j'ai dû apprendre à être à l'aise avec ce que mon corps pouvait faire et simplement accepter qu'il faisait un travail plus important à ce moment-là. Trouver la paix avec cela est vraiment important - en tant qu'athlètes, nous voulons toujours nous dépasser et rester aussi en forme que possible, mais mon meilleur conseil serait d'écouter vraiment votre corps et de faire ce que vous sentez que vous pouvez et voulez faire.


Ne vous mettez pas la pression, ne vous comparez pas aux autres et ne soyez pas tentée de participer à des courses après la naissance du bébé. Même si les objectifs sont généralement très importants, dans ce cas, cela met beaucoup trop de pression sur la rapidité avec laquelle vous serez prête à participer à nouveau à des courses. Votre objectif pendant la grossesse est de faire grandir un être humain en bonne santé !


Après l'accouchement, ne soyez pas tentée de vous précipiter, soyez indulgente avec vous-même et accordez-vous du temps pour vous habituer à votre nouvelle normalité. Les nouveau-nés sont intenses ! Lorsque vous serez prête, je vous conseillerais de passer un « contrôle technique pour maman » - la plupart des cliniques de physiothérapie proposent désormais ce type de contrôle avec des physiothérapeutes spécialisés dans ce domaine. Ils pourront vous examiner, quel que soit le type d'accouchement que vous avez eu, et évaluer votre tronc et votre plancher pelvien pour déterminer si vous êtes prête à commencer un exercice doux.


Une fois que vous avez le feu vert, augmentez progressivement . J'ai commencé à nager et à faire du vélo 8 à 9 semaines après l'accouchement, mais je n'ai pas couru pendant environ 3,5 mois, car c'est l'activité la plus intense pour le corps et le plancher pelvien. J'ai commencé par un mélange de marche et de jogging, en augmentant très lentement sur environ 6 semaines avant de faire ma première course continue de 30 minutes.


À partir de ce moment-là, cela devient beaucoup plus amusant. Vous avez progressivement développé les choses, vous avez eu le feu vert d'un spécialiste, vous pouvez commencer à introduire plus de volume et plus d'intensité et même commencer à envisager de participer à nouveau à des courses. Si vous êtes à cette phase, ou si vous avez des enfants depuis un certain temps et que vous envisagez de reprendre le triathlon, c'est le moment où un entraîneur et un groupe de personnes avec qui s'entraîner sont si importants. Avoir des amis avec qui s'entraîner rend tout beaucoup plus amusant et sociable - et vous aide à vous pousser pendant les entraînements les plus difficiles . C'est encore plus utile si certains de ces amis sont dans une situation similaire à la vôtre concernant la parentalité, car vous aurez tellement d'expériences similaires à partager et ils comprendront vraiment et feront preuve d'empathie lorsque vous vous précipiterez après une séance pour aller chercher votre enfant à la crèche ou lorsque vous devrez annuler parce que la maladie a de nouveau frappé le foyer !


Un coach peut également être très utile pour vous guider dans votre retour à la compétition et définir vos objectifs, tout en étant quelqu'un qui vous aide à vous responsabiliser. Il aura probablement coaché ​​de nombreuses autres mères ou parents, il comprendra donc également les restrictions auxquelles vous êtes soumis et pourra vous aider à tirer le meilleur parti de vous-même avec le temps dont vous disposez.


Reprendre le sport après la grossesse : du temps pour soi

Le triathlon est un sport merveilleux avec une grande communauté qui accueille et profite à presque tout le monde, quels que soient l'âge, les capacités ou le sexe.


Le défi consistant à essayer de combiner trois sports en une seule journée et de maximiser votre potentiel dans les trois sports peut être sans fin et addictif. C'est un véritable sport de style de vie où tout votre mode de vie peut devenir une question de santé et d'activité, et peut-être plus important encore, de stimulation mentale et de bonheur.


Il est très important de prendre du temps pour soi, même une fois devenus parents, et c'est là que la reprise du sport après la grossesse peut être vraiment bénéfique. Même si votre identité évoluera sans doute pour inclure celle de parent, cela ne doit pas être votre seule identité et avoir quelque chose pour vous-même que vous aimez et qui vous stimule physiquement et mentalement est si important pour la santé et le bonheur en général.


Dans cet esprit, soyez prêt à demander de l’aide et du soutien pour vous accorder les heures dont vous avez besoin pour vous-même. Ce n’est pas un échec en tant que parent, c’est un investissement pour vous rendre plus heureux, en meilleure santé et probablement meilleur.


Il existe bien sûr d’autres sports qui peuvent offrir les mêmes avantages que le triathlon et peu importe ce que vous choisissez d’essayer, j’encourage tout le monde – mère ou non – à s’impliquer et à voir par vous-même à quel point il est gratifiant de s’engager à essayer.

Want to swim without getting tired? It’s all about breathing and technique… 1️⃣ Stay Streamlined Keep your body flat and straight, with a slight rotation with each stroke. Engage your core and don’t look up - this will stop your legs from sinking. 2️⃣ Breathe Smoothly Stick to a steady breathing rhythm—breathe every 2-3 strokes or switch sides every 3 if that works. Control your exhale underwater, so you can inhale when you turn to breath. 3️⃣ Relax Your Strokes Don’t fight the water—stretch your arms out, glide, then pull. Keep it long and smooth to save energy. 4️⃣ Kick Efficiently Use small, gentle flutter kicks to stay balanced. A 2-beat kick (one kick per arm stroke) is great for long swims. 5️⃣ Master Your Pull Keep your elbows high for a strong catch and pull the water back with your forearms and hands. You want to feel the water’s pressure against your arm and hand for a powerful stroke. 6️⃣ Build Endurance Gradually Add interval training to your swim sessions to build endurance: swim 50-100m, rest for 15-20 seconds, and repeat. Be honest, do you do these steps after each swim to keep your goggles in good condition? 1️⃣ Give Them a Rinse After each swim, rinse your goggles with fresh water to get rid of chlorine, salt, and grime. 2️⃣ Hands Off the Lenses Don’t touch or rub the inside of the lenses – it’ll help keep the anti-fog coating working properly. 3️⃣ Let Them Dry Naturally Leave your goggles to air dry completely before putting them away. 4️⃣ Store Them Safely Pop them in a protective case when you’re not using them to stop scratches on the lenses!
