Matthew Collins
Matthew's Story
Matt started triathlon as a junior at the age of 6 as his Dad was the coach of the local triathlon club. As he grew older, he worked through the ranks of junior racing but always loved the idea of long course racing, over the draft legal side, partly due to watching his Dad race Ironman and watching Kona from a young age. When he went to university at Loughborough, he started to chase my pro triathlon license and in 2023 he won Outlaw X to qualify to race as a pro for the 2024 season. Matt is now balancing professional triathlon with working as a part time gardener alongside his Dad, who is also his coach.
Anything you want to add to background story: I’m currently entering my third season and am now looking to make the step up to consistently racing at the front end of the sport.
Why do you enjoy competing?
Racing others, I enjoy pushing myself but there is so only so much you can get out of yourself in training or time trialling and racing allows me to get that 100% out of myself.
Inspiration
Lots, my dad, was a major driver as I was growing up but also lots of the pros through the years. Craig Alexander, Jan, Patrick Lange and recently the Norwegians all showing what is possible in the sport.
Greatest Challenge
Did my first Ironman with zero run training due to injury, gritted teeth but would not recommend it!
