Sarah-Jane's Story

Sarah-Jane (SJ)met Vicky Holland while still competing as a swimmer. She joined her for some triathlon-specific swim sessions, as she got to know Vicky and her husband, Rhys, they convinced her to tag along to a few run sessions and join them for some easy rides. Not long after that, SJ became Vicky’s training partner, that’s when the bug really bit.

Inspiration

My husband’s third-place finish at the inaugural PTO Championship in Daytona.

Greatest Challenge

Being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s autoimmune disease has been the biggest challenge I’ve faced. It forced me to slow down when I was used to always pushing on and that was really hard to come to terms with. Dealing with a vast range of symptoms along with the uncertainty and time away from training and racing tested me more than ever. It’s been tough, but it’s forced me to train smarter rather than harder and to appreciate that quality sometimes matters more than volume.

Season Goals

My main goal is to gain experience at a new distance and prove that I can be competitive

Best Result to Date

The result I’m most proud of is winning the African Championships in 2022. Leading the race solo from gun to tape made it incredibly special, particularly given the journey to get there. Just a month before the race, I had a bike crash that resulted in two broken fingers and heavy bruising to my knees, which really limited my training. Going into the race with very little confidence made the win feel very sweet.

Race you have enjoyed the most

I’m torn between two races! The first was the Quarteira European Cup, my first standard distance triathlon and I had absolutely no idea how it would go in such a stacked field. I remember standing in the call up line, so nervous I was in tears, to sprinting for 10th place and executing the race exactly as I had hoped I would (even though I lost the sprint and finished 11th). Shortly after that, I raced the Portocolom555 Triathlon, my first taste of non-drafting racing, and it planted the seed that stepping up to long distance could one day be possible. Racing in the unknown was so much fun and I ended up winning!

NEBULA TRI TEAM

Nebula have chosen to launch a new Professional Women’s Triathlon Team. Why? Taking the step from Age Grouper to Professional is exceptionally hard, where most have to work full time alongside training and then need to be an influencer on the side to support any brands working with them. It’s also a lonely existence, with little positive feedback for a while. Going from first in AG races, to midpack Pro can be demoralising.

We want to support up and coming Female Athletes to take this step, with financial support as well as all the kit they need for a season from our fantastic partners. Whilst we handle the story telling of their journey for them.

We believe all athletes should have the same chance, not just those with more followers, and quite regularly Female athletes are overlooked or treated differently to their male counterparts. No longer!

So Nebula, where stars are formed, with the best up and coming female talent in Triathlon to grow and reach for the stars.

Alongside this we have our community and coached athletes forming a great team of Age Group Athletes driving for their own goals. Some coached by the Pro girls or our coaches. Others just wanting to be part of a community of like minded people.
