Ascend Sleeveless Wetsuit

The Ascend is the sleeveless version of the Glide, Zone3's entry-level open water wetsuit, for swimming and racing in warmer water. Taking the sleeves off removes the resistance around the shoulder, so the stroke stays completely open and the suit runs cooler over a long swim. Underneath, the build carries over: medium core buoyancy to lift the hips, a high-stretch nylon gusset so the legs can open for breaststroke, and a Speedflo coating to keep drag down. An adjustable neck closure lets you set the seal yourself.

Ascend Sleeveless Wetsuit

WHO IT'S FOR

The Ascend is for swimmers in warmer water, racing in summer, or anyone who overheats in a full-sleeve suit and ends up unzipping halfway round. Sleeves are also the part of a wetsuit most swimmers notice, particularly through the recovery and the catch. This suit removes them and keeps the buoyancy.

  • Summer open water swimming and warm-water racing
  • Swimmers who feel restricted or overheated in a full-sleeve suit
  • Front crawl as the main stroke, with breaststroke for recovery or social swims
  • A second suit for the warmer half of the season

WHERE IT SITS IN THE RANGE

The Ascend is the sleeveless counterpart to the Glide and sits at the same point in the range, sharing its build and its entry-level positioning. Warmth is where it gives ground: this is the least warm suit Zone3 makes, so for cold water or a long spring swim the full-sleeve Glide is the better choice, and the Active-Flex adds a Yulex chest panel and a higher neckline for colder mornings.

KEY BENEFITS

1. You hold a flatter position for less effort. 3mm neoprene through the chest, core and upper legs gives medium core buoyancy, lifting the hips so you stop kicking to keep yourself level.

2. You keep your pace without overheating. The Speedflo coating gives a low-drag surface through the water, and the sleeveless cut lets you swim longer in warm conditions before heat becomes the limiting factor.

3. Nothing sits on your shoulders. With no material across the shoulder and upper arm, the recovery and the catch are completely unrestricted, which is the single biggest reason swimmers choose sleeveless.

4. Breaststroke works properly. A high-stretch nylon gusset lets the legs open sideways without resistance, with low buoyancy through the legs so they stay submerged.

5. The seal is yours to set. An adjustable neck closure lets you tighten or ease the neckline, which matters more on a sleeveless suit where water has an easier route in.

WHAT YOU'LL FEEL

The first thing you notice is your shoulders, or rather that you do not notice them. Reaching forward and rolling into the catch happens without anything pulling at the top of the arm. Your hips still sit up and the water still runs flat around you. On a warm day you can keep going without the boiled feeling that ends a swim early. Bare arms in cool water feel colder than you expect, so this one is worth saving for the warmer months.

EFFICIENCY

Hips up, effort down Body position is where most open water swimmers lose time, and it is the first thing a wetsuit should fix. Medium core buoyancy through the chest, core and upper legs lifts your hips into line with your shoulders, so you stop kicking to hold yourself flat. Taking the sleeves off does not cost you any of that. Tech behind it: medium core buoyancy, 3mm core and upper leg neoprene

SPEED

Low drag, no overheating Warm water makes heat the limiting factor long before fitness does. The Speedflo coating on the smoothskin panels keeps drag down, while bare arms let you shed heat across a long swim or a summer race. You hold your pace for longer instead of slowing to cool off. Tech behind it: Speedflo coating, smoothskin neoprene, sleeveless construction

FLEXIBILITY

Shoulders completely free A sleeveless suit removes the one thing swimmers most often notice about neoprene. With nothing across the shoulder or upper arm, the recovery and the catch move exactly as they do without a wetsuit. Below the waist, a high-stretch nylon gusset lets the legs open wide for breaststroke, with low leg buoyancy keeping them submerged. Tech behind it: sleeveless construction, high-stretch nylon gusset panel

Key Features

BUOYANCY AND BODY POSITION

  • Medium core buoyancy: 3mm neoprene through the chest, core and upper legs lifts the hips for a flatter body position.
  • Low leg buoyancy: thinner neoprene through the lower legs keeps them submerged in a natural swimming position.

STROKE MECHANICS

  • Sleeveless construction: no material across the shoulder or upper arm, for a completely unrestricted stroke.
  • High-stretch nylon gusset panel: allows the lateral leg movement breaststroke requires, with no added buoyancy.

SPEED AND DRAG

  • Speedflo coating: Zone3's durable low-drag coating, for a smoother surface through the water.
  • Smoothskin neoprene panels: a cleaner surface through the water than nylon.

COMFORT AND LINING

  • Adjustable neck closure: a zigzag closure you set yourself, for a secure and comfortable seal.
  • Lined interior: easier entry and comfort against the skin.
  • Reflective detailing: improves visibility in low light.

CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALS

  • Flatlock construction: durable seam construction throughout.
  • Nylon panels: abrasion resistance through the knees, shins and ankles, where the suit takes most wear.
  • 3mm to 2mm neoprene: graded from the core outward.
  • Limestone-derived smoothskin neoprene: made from limestone and recycled tyres, saving around 200g of CO2 per suit.

FIT GUIDANCE

Snug everywhere, restrictive nowhere. You should feel the suit holding your body without pinching at the shoulders or compressing your chest to the point where breathing feels laboured. If you can't take a full breath on land, size up. If there's loose material across the shoulders or chest, size down. Air pockets at the lower back usually mean you need a longer suit, such as an MT (Medium Tall), not a smaller size.

Size down if you're racing — a tighter fit gives you more from the suit's buoyancy and reduces water flushing. Size up if you're prioritising comfort for longer open water swims or training sessions where you'll be in the suit for extended periods.

Take your time the first time. Undo the zip fully and fold the top half of the wetsuit down, zip on the back. Start at the ankles and slowly work the neoprene up your legs in sections —don't try to pull from the top. Smooth out any air pockets as you go, particularly around the lower legs and crotch, before pulling the suit up over your torso. Reaching your hands towards the sky and helps to slide the arm sleeves into place. Use the pads of your fingers throughout, never your fingernails. The Silk-X lining will make this easier than most suits, but neoprene always requires patience on the first few wears. It will get easier as the suit breaks in.
